The backgrounds marked with Slave orientation can spawn as southerners in the desert city states and are identical to their northern counterparts, except they may start with a different visual theme and use southern weapons and armour instead.

The Champion symbol indicates this Background is unique, a commander or at least semi unique and cannot be hired or found unless under specific circumstances. Like an origin or event. For deeper information on how backgrounds are made, see Backgrounds (technical).

Some backgrounds, due to being commanders, will have a fixed perktree that can not be changed. Background effects stack with retinue additions.

Technical Information Background Inventor
Background Name
  • Some backgrounds are mirrors of the male counterparts. For example; Nuns are mirrors of Monks. They have the same camp effects, stats, events and perks.
  • The only difference is that men start with +10 health and -10 fatigue, women start with -10 health and +10 fatigue.
    • A few backgrounds are specifically male or female only, like shieldmaidens are always female.
    • Many backgrounds are both male and female and share the same name, like hedge knights.
  • The above is dependant on what option you chose for "Battle Sisters" when setting up your game.
Camp Effects & Resource Modifiers
  • Camp effects determine the efficiency of specific brothers when assigned to specific activities via tents.
  • For more information check camp management.
  • Resource modifiers dictate the bonuses a brother may bring in carrying resources like medicine, tools and extra stash space.
  • Some brothers may be able to reduce the amount of resources a tent uses, but only when they are assigned to that tent themselves.
Perktrees
  • Perktrees are divided up into weapon, defense, traits, enemy, class and magic - they each give their own sequence of perks that the background can take advantage of.
  • It is possible to have more perktrees than what is shown below through random chance.
  • On spawn brothers will be assigned a set of perk trees that make up their total perktree.
  • This only happens when using dynamic perks (enabled by default).
Background Type
  • Some backgrounds may be predisposed to react either positively or negatively towards certain origins or commanders.
  • Some backgrounds may not be hired at all with some origins.
    • For example, the Crusader can hire crusader based backgrounds, for which they will receive a mood boost. However outlaw backgrounds cannot join and therefore will not be in the recruiting pool.
  • Some background types may have unique interactions with events.
